The Guardian

She guarded the entry
atop the flight of stairs,
perhaps closed one eye a bit
and listened with her ears,
while I slept twisted
in visions surreal.

With cries of anguish
muffled into feather down,
she advanced to the sound,
to extinguish with touch of her nose, the ghosts that rose
from fears untold.

And I took comfort in the beast,
that woeful look,
the paw that shook,
long ears that drooped,
her thrashing tail,
and cold wet nose.
