The Bridge

It's all water under the bridge she thought. And with that, she suddenly began wishing she had a life jacket, as the thoughts came pouring in like buckets from a monsoon. Always the ebb and then the tide to once again take her thoughts across oceans of intangible recollections. She was drowning, and no matter how hard she tried to get a grasp on reality, no one was on the horizon to throw her that lifeline.  She new it was sink or swim, but then what? To where? Confusion had her mind in a vice..Squeezing, wringing the salty tears to form puddles at her feet. No mateys, they all jumped ship months ago. No captain to guide her ship, no sexton showing the stars. Her life was just hanging in the balance, in a dark night, in a sea of puddled tears.  She had to get it together.

She wanted to forgive him, She wanted to believe in the fairy tale. If she could only force the tears back, put the stars back in the heavens and build a bridge that they could meet in the middle. But she didn't know how. Then she remembered.

To build a bridge you need a solid footing, and rip rap to accept the crashing waves. She was going to have to be the architect of her own life. She no longer needed a captain to steer her boat, she was her own captain now. And the stars would shine again, for she would let her heart be its own sextant, she was going to follow her own North star. And then she laughed, and she laughed so hard she didn't feel the waves crashing around her feet, then she tasted the salty sea air, looked up to the heavens for the last time, and was  swept away by the tides of her new found realization...She needed that bridge!
